There’s something for everyone landing at Cappy’s this week, from dank IPA’s to stouts, to sours.  Take a look!

Clown Shoes White Tail Unidragon- White Tail Unidragon is a 12 percent ABV Russian imperial stout brewed with rye malt as well as Cascade and Columbus hops before being aged in bourbon barrels.  The base beer is Ohio Unidragon, which was brewed last year exclusively for Ohio.  If you like big beers, this is one that you have to try!

 

bsiderhinegeistRhinegeist B-Side- “Last year we teamed up with Shake It Records to collaborate on a Record Store Day IPA and dubbed it A Side. We had so much fun brewing and grooving and pouring beers in Northside that we figured we’d make it a tradition! Flip it to the B Side IPA (6.8%, 65 IBU), pop the cap, set the spin, and beatbox your grin to these fair dinkum beats of the banana benders.”

 

bellsoatsmobileBell’s Oatsmobile-  This hop-forward session pale ale uses a blend of classic and modern Pacific Northwest hops, including Mosaic, Equinox and Glacier, for a pungent blend of peach, mango and tropical aromas. The signature ingredient – oats – are what makes Oatsmobile Ale stand apart, and gives it a body that you don’t see in most other session Pale Ales.  ABV: 4.3%.

Wild yeasts and bacteria run free in our sour-aging cellar, the House of Funk, creating vibrant sour and acidic character in this delicate, yet complex wheat beer. The refreshingly tart session beer will tease your palate with a subtle, layered nuance.” ABV: 4%.

 

New-Holland-Dragons-Milk-Reserve-Chocolate-CoffeeNew Holland Dragon’s Milk Reserve Coffee&Chocolate- This beer is aged with coffee and chocolate. Rich, indulgent chocolate flavors are seductively punctuated with dark and roasty coffee bitterness.  ABV: 11%.

 

 

self-starter*750xx1658-933-0-124Warped Wing Self Starter- “The name of this session IPA was inspired by both the electric self-starter invented by Daytonian, Charles Kettering in 1911 and by definition: a person who is able to work or play without needing a lot of help or instruction. At 5.2% ABV this beer features the perfect balance between malt, hops and a clean finish – a combination of which creates a beer with high drinkability.  This session IPA is pale orange in color with copper highlights and citrus/fruity aromas and flavors from the Amarillo hops that were added during the boil and dry hopped at the end of fermentation. The malt character is slightly bready or nutty to start with a bitter dry finish.”

Bygone brewers, repping the Sixpoint star, provided the concept and our friends at Jacobsen Salt hooked us up with the key ingredient. It’s salty, it’s sour, and it’s slammin’. It’s Mad Science.”  ABV: 4%.

Deschutes Hop Slice- A trio of hops come together in this crisp session IPA. Brewed with Meyer lemon, Hop Slice balances floral hop notes and a subtle citrus kick.  ABV: 4.5%.

Mikkeller Crooked Moon Tattoo Stockholm- An Imperial Stout brewed with figs, brewed at De Proefbrouwerij.  ABV:  8%.

 

 

shortsmeltmybrainShort’s Brewing Melt My Brain- “Melt My Brain is an experimental Golden Ale brewed with coriander, juniper berries, limes and blended with tonic water to create the tasting experience of drinking a gin and tonic cocktail. Delicate aromas of citrus and pine flow into bold bright flavors of sweet lime with a slightly sticky bitterness. Refreshing and clean, a tasty tonic effervescence provokes the palate for more. Melt My Brain was awarded a silver medal in the Experimental Beer category at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival.”  ABV: 6.1%.

 

Prairie-Artisan-Ales-Prairie-Vous-FrancaisPrairie Vous Francais- “Prairie-Vous Francais is a celebration of simple elegance. This farmhouse ale is brewed to be refreshing. We use barley, oats, and wheat to build a foundation for saaz hops and brettanomyces bruxellensis to play. You’ll find this beer to be slightly tart and a touch hoppy. Prairie-Vous Francais is one of our many farmhouse beers we hope you will love as much as we do.”  ABV: 4%.

 

Prairie_Phantasmagoria_label_1024x1024Prairie Phantasmagoria- “Phantasmagoria is an IPA that is low in malt flavors, but high in hops. We brew this beer as a nood to the big hoppy beers of the west coast. We use loads of citrusy and piney hops at the end of the boil and in the fermenter to make this beer a hop experience.”  ABV: 8%.

 

 

stoneporterStone Encore 6th Anniversary Porter- “We celebrated our first five years in business by releasing anniversary India pale ales, with each subsequent IPA brewed to be hoppier and more intense than the previous. For our 6th anniversary in 2002, we extended this concept by making an intensified version of Stone Smoked Porter. We cranked up the malts and hops a notch or three and conditioned it on French and American oak, which accentuated our porter’s distinctive smokiness and amplified its chocolate and roast coffee flavors while also adding subtle notes of toffee, cherries, dried berries and vanilla. We’re proud to give those who missed out—as well as those who didn’t—a fresh shot at experiencing this smoky, dark-as-night wonder.”  ABV: 8%.

The inclusion of rice makes this 9.4% ABV IPA drier than most, accenting the hefty dose of Citra and Amarillo hops. It’s a fitting tribute to the Japanese Rice goddess, who is also a fertility goddess.”  Limited release, get it while it’s here!

Leelanau Brewing Illuminati-  An Imperial Stout brewed at Jolly Pumpkin with naturally occurring wild yeasts and aged in four fresh wet bourbon barrels and one wild, sour bourbon barrel.  ABV: 8.5%.

 

 

michilimackinac-clippedLeelanau Brewing Michilimackinac- “Brewed at Jolly Pumpkin with naturally occurring wild yeasts and the first time we have used bourbon barrels instead of French Oak. Four Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels became known as the Funky Four after they spent 1.5 years holding cherry port at a #Leelanau winery before heading to Jolly Pumpkin where they held La Roja and Biere de Mars for four years. We brewed 10bbls of Line 5 Batch 1 and aged it in the Funky Four and brought in one fresh, wet Buffalo Trace barrel and blended them together.”  ABV: 8%.

This popular brew was inspired by ABC founder, head brewer and spiritual leader Matt Greff whose cartoon enhanced image graces the label. Pairs with salty cured meats, strong stinky cheeses, whiskey and cigars. Also great with man-cave classics like pepperoni pizza and loaded nachos.”  ABV: 9%.

We toned down the hops a bit to allow cocoa nibs to contribute some pleasing bitterness, while vanilla notes from the oak combine with the cocoa to create an aroma and flavor akin to a gourmet chocolate bar. A dash of cayenne keeps things lively, adding just a bit of heat to the finish.”  ABV: 9.5%.

New Beer Arrivals 4/8-4/15

Upland-Revved-Up-Coffee-Blonde-Ale-label

Spring has finally sprung, which means it’s time for porch sittin’ and beer drinkin’!  We’ve got you covered.  Check out some of this week’s new craft beer arrivals!

 

Upland Brewing Revved Up Coffee Blonde Ale- In collaboration with Revolution Brewing.  The color of a beer can be deceptive. If you judged this beer on its light appearance, you may be in for a surprise when it delivers a full, creamy body and rich roasted flavors. The malt portfolio is delicate enough to showcase the coffee character, yet strong enough to support a distinctive chocolaty roast character that one might typically expect to find in a much darker colored beer.  ABV: 5.6%.

Revolution Brewing Revved Up Coffee Brown Ale-  “This brown ale is brewed in collaboration with our friends at Upland Brewing Co. in Bloomington, IN and Dark Matter Coffee here in Chicago. Brewed with a combination of Pale, Dark Munich, Caramel 77, Chocolate malt and Flaked Oats the resulting beer has a deep brown hue, smooth mouthfeel and layers of complex caramel flavors and a faint hint of baker’s chocolate. We use Magnum and Sorachi Ace hops in the brewhouse to lend a mellow balanced bitterness to this ale. After fermentation, we transfer this beer into another tank that holds bags of whole bean Dark Matter Coffee and allow it to rest on these beans for a week before being packaged! Sitting on the whole beans infuses this beer with deep, rich, roasty aromas that reminds you of being in one of DMC’s coffee shops!”  ABV: 5.5%.

 

Ce-R3S9UYAAWzjdFat Head’s Bonehead Red- “We can boldly say that this hoppy red is unlike any other you’ve tried. Hopped-up to the max, deep ruby in color, with a smooth as silk mouthfeel and an almost pungent piney aroma. Malts bone-up their magic with a hearty, biscuity, almost rustic touch of flavor and a slightly bitter fruitiness. A creamy head always tops it off. Recently Bonefide with a gold medal at the GABF.”  ABV: 9.4%.

Uinta’s new seasonal twist on their top-selling product, Hop Nosh Tangerine IPA, is brewed with real tangerine juice adding a tartness that compliments the notable tropical hop characteristics of the classic Hop Nosh.  ABV: 7.3%.

 

chocofrutpina5 Rabbit Chocofrut Pina- “ChocoFrut is our 5 Rabbit melding of luscious, chocolatey dark-roasted malts and the bright flavors of real fruit, for a series of beers that are creamy, fruity and ultra smooth. In the world of beer, ChocoFrut is a rare confection.  This Piña version uses six different malts and plenty of real pineapple purée in the fermenter.”  ABV: 7.1%.

Unlike traditional shandy’s, Turbo Shandy revs it up a couple notches with a high test, full flavored approach.  It tastes like a whiskey sour, and it’s delicious!  ABV: 7%.

These are two great tastes that taste great together, and will open your eyes to the inventive side of brewing! This brew is a collaboration ale with Crooked Stave Artisan Brewing of Fort Collins, Colorado. Chad Yakobson, Brewmaster/Owner of Crooked Stave, is well known for his skill and knowledge in the brewing of sour and Brettanomyces driven beers. The beer was brewed at Epic by the two brewers. Kevin Crompton, Epic’s Brewmaster, and Chad spent several weeks working on the recipe and selecting the proper Brett strains and barrels for the beer to morph from a golden Saison into a Saison-Brett Golden Ale.”  ABV: 9%.

 

Hibernation-BA-Bottle-Image-AGreat Divide Barrel Aged Hibernation- “Over 12 months in whiskey barrels has completely transformed our prized winter seasonal, producing a Hibernation that starts with big whiskey flavors before mellowing out into luscious chocolate, dark fruit and vanilla.”  ABV: 10.5%.

 

averytwentythreeAvery Twenty Three-  “Inspired by Brabant (remember that one?) and the goodness of its marriage of Brettanomyces fermentation and Belgian dark malts, we’ve crafted this celebratory wild ale using three strains of Bretts. Our house strain, Brettanomyces drie, brings loads of ripe stone fruit aromas to the mix. Brettanomyces bruxellensis lends the classic horsey and rustic aspects of a traditional wild ale, while Brettanomyces custersianus delivers massive tropical fruit essences to the flavor party. Add some beautiful, dark and robust Belgian specialty malts for caramel, chocolate and fig elements and you have this — our rendition of a Dark Farmhouse Ale.”  ABV: 7.9%.

Barkley's-Belgian-Style-AleAnderson Valley Barkley’s Belgian Ale- “Brewed in a cloistered nook of remote Anderson Valley, this handcrafted Belgian-style strong ale may be the closest you’ll ever get to heaven on earth,” reads the beer label. “Made in very limited quantity, it is malty, tangy and a little wild, it is sure to raise your spirits.”  ABV: 9%.

 

andersonvalleyAnderson Valley Salted Caramel Barrel Aged Porter- “Aged for 6 months in Wild Turkey bourbon barrels, our Salted Caramel is woody and slightly sweet with notes of vanilla and coconut. It’s smooth with a medium-light body and mouthfeel and a light banana/fruit aroma. There’s some caramel and peanut brittle flavors but not cloying or overpowering.”  ABV: 6%.

The indecency doesn’t stop there, as it packs a wallop at 9% but you won’t notice because it drinks so remarkable smooth.”  ABV: 9%.

After an accidental dose of gamma rays, Bruce’s body chemistry was changed forever. Angry thoughts turned this frail, mild-mannered scientist into a big, green mean thing, better known as the Hulk.  So to help the Hulk chill after an aggressive episode, we invented Gamma Bomb IPA. A golden hop-lovers potion with earthy aromas of juicy citrus. Taste big flavors from Centennial, Amarillo and Cascade hops. Like the Hulk, this beer is bitter and slightly piney. The malt character is light and nutty and the brew ends with a dry finish.”  ABV: 7.2%.
