New Beer Arrivals 7/25-7/29

Against The Grain Kentucky Ryed Chiquen- “An amber ale brewed with rye malt and aged in rye whiskey barrels. Our first barrel aged beer here at Against the Grain is the Kentucky Ryed Chiquen.  Brewed with Maris Otter from the UK and rye malt and caramel rye from Germany, imparting a spicy, fruity and dry flavor. Then hopped with enough English Nugget and Kent Goldings just to balance and fermented with our house ale yeast. After fermentation we moved the entire batch into the AtG private dining room and into used Redemption Rye barrels from our good friends at Strong’s Spirits. There it aged for 5 weeks until we felt it had picked up the right amount of residual bourbon character and oak flavors. We then transferred it to our serving tank, carbonated it and the end result is on tap now, a balanced drinkable and complex barrel aged beer.”  ABV: 8.6%.

aletothecheifAvery Ale To The Chief- “Originally brewed to celebrate Inauguration Day, January 20, 2009, Avery Brewing Company elected to give their beer Ale to the Chief a third term to commemorate the 2016 election. Rather than categorizing the beer as Imperial, Avery created a new beer style to honor our country’s democracy, calling the beer a Presidential Pale Ale. A brew worthy of the Oval Office!”  Only brewed every 4 years!  ABV: 8.1%.

sixpointpuffSixpoint Puff- “If you love Resin, try tasting it straight from the tanks. That’s PUFF – a hazy, unfiltered pour with an extra dose of dry hops… a new blend devised just for Puff.  We decided to capture our own puffy, cloudy brew in a limited release can. First puff says it all – this ish is Keller. Breathe deep and put your head in the clouds… it’s Mad Science.”  ABV: 9.8%.

Mikkeller Hallo Ich Bin- A Berliner-style Weisse beer brewed with Peaches.  ABV: 3.7%.

Tool Sur Citra- A Sour pale dry hopped with Citra. ABV: 5.5%.

Prairie-Funky-Gold-Mosaic-e1377094502383-200x200Prairie Funky Gold Mosaic- “Funky Gold Mosaic is a dry-hopped sour ale. We took Prairie Gold and dry-hopped it with a huge amount of Mosaic hops. The end results are tropical, sour, and an all around new beer drinking experience! This beer is great fresh, but will continue to develop as the wild yeast continues to work in the beer.”  ABV: 7.5%.

Stillwater Nu Tropic- A contemporary, hazy IPA brewed with mango and passionfruit.  ABV: 6%.

Urban Family Brewing Crimson Fawn- A sour farmhouse ale with blood orange.  ABV: 6.5%.

urbanfamkriekUrban Family Brewing Kriek- “Our Kriek underwent thirteen months of life inside barrels, playing house with our indigenous cultures. Soon after, we married this beer with over 3000 pounds of balaton & montgomery cherries, allowing it to mature, and harmonize. Enjoy our hommage to a Belgian style ale.”  ABV: 6.3%.

magnoliaredux1Urban Family Brewing Magnolia Redux- “Hoppy Magnolia revisited. Dry-hopped farmhouse with Amarillo and Mosaic hops.”  ABV: 6.5%.

flamingoseUinta Flamingose- “Inspired by 16th century brewers in Goslar, Germany, this salted wheat beer (with a tropical twist) is snappy and tart with a remarkably refreshing finish… and just the right amount of pineapple.”  ABV: 4%.

oracleBell’s The Oracle- “Our take on the West Coast-style Double India Pale Ale, The Oracle places hop intensity first and foremost, making only the slightest concession to malt and balance.  The fireworks start with the aromatic punch of dry-hop sessions with hop varieties from the Pacific Northwest. Resinous, citrusy hop flavors mixed with aggressive bitterness from a massive kettle addition deliver on that aromatic promise.”  ABV: 10%.

NIPNowhere In Particular Batch #002- “Rice, mosaic, and simcoe hops combine to form this deliciously dangerous brew. The IBUs and ABV have been reduced from prior iterations making this beer supremely smashable, Tropical hop flavors blend perfectly with the mellow and balanced malt bill. Medium bodied, golden in color, and right around 8.5% this is a beer drinker’s summer dream. We even put it in cans so whether at the pool, hitting the links, or in a drunken stupor feel safe and free to pound these brews as a celebration to the warm months and all that come with them.”

Maui-La-Perouse-WhiteMaui Brewing La Perouse White- “La Perouse White is a fresh handcrafted Belgian inspired witbier brewed with wheat and European Pilsner malts, spiced with coriander and fresh local mandarin oranges.”  ABV: 5.2%.

DES_ETIKET.inddDrie Fonteinen Zwet.Be-  A Belgian Porter brewed with wild yeasts from their lambic casks.  ABV: 7%.

apocalypsecow3 Floyd’s Apocalypse Cow- “This complex, double India Pale Ale has an intense citrus and floral hop aroma balanced by a velvety malt body which has been augmented with lactose milk sugar. With this different take on an IPA we have brewed an ale that is both pleasing to drink and, once again, “not normal.”  ABV: 8.6%.

warmullet3 Floyd’s War Mullet- “This double IPA will make you want to grow a mullet (if you don’t already have one) and go to war (if your’re not already).”  ABV: 8.1%.

wigsplitter3 Floyd’s WigSplitter- “Big Wig, No Wig or Comb Over. Wigsplitter is an oatmeal stout brewed with freshly ground espresso. It’s for those of us who like a little beer with their coffee or a little bit of coffee with their beer.”  ABV: 7.7%.

alphaking3 Floyd’s Alpha King- “A bold yet balanced American Pale Ale with slight caramel sweetness and aggressive citrus hoppiness. This is our flagship beer.”  ABV: 6.66%.

Gumballhead13 Floyd’s Gumballhead- “An American wheat beer with a refreshing, crisp citrus finish. This delicious session beer is brewed with boatloads of Amarillo hops.”  ABV: 5.6%.

New Beer Arrivals 7/18-7/22

Braxton Trophy- Kentucky Give Back Pale Ale- Trophy is Braxton’s Kentucky Give Back Pale Ale. A single hop pale ale that features a new, popular or rare and hard to find hop every quarter.  The latest incarnation uses the earthy, floral and fruity palisade hops. It has an herbal, grassy character and is associated with nectar fruits with hints of citrus.  Braxton will donate 5% of all proceeds from the Trophy series to a different local charity for each one released.  ABV: 5%.

Spontanorange.combi.FnlMikkeller Spontanorange- From their delicious “Spontan” series, this one is a lambic with orange.  ABV: 7.7%

maine-beer-company-another-oneMaine Another One- “When we expanded our brewery the stress was something to say the least. I ran out of creative juice for a minute so decided another for inspiration. Another One IPA and Weez use the same hops but different malts. The result- Another One is very light in color, and Weez is very dark. Each, however, allow the hops to shine out front.”  ABV: 7%.

Bruery-Terreux-Beret-960x466The Bruery Beret- “Beret is as artistic as those who wear its namesake cap.  Our brewers developed a silky, full-bodied wheat ale which we began fermenting with a Belgian-style witbier yeast strain.  To finish the fermentation, we added our collection of barnyard bacteria, intended to slowly sour the ale, bringing out a slight funk and refreshing piquancy.  Finally, a small dose of pureed raspberries were added for just a hint of fruity tannins, putting the berry in Beret.”  ABV: 9%.

bruery-trade-winds-tripelThe Bruery Trade Winds- “Our Summer seasonal, Trade Winds Tripel is a Belgian-style Golden Ale with a Southeast Asian twist. Instead of using candi sugar (typical for such a beer), we use rice in the mash to lighten the body and increase the gravity, and spice with Thai Basil. The result is an aromatic, digestible and complex beer made for a lazy summer evening.”  ABV: 8.6%.

tonnelereieThe Bruery Quadruple Tonnellerie- “Our Tonnellerie series is the perfect showcase of our “wildly traditional bière”. French for “cooperage”, each beer in the series shares one core trait: they were all fermented in oak. Beyond that, the recipes and styles are as unique as the cues they take from nature. Quadrupel Tonnellerie, a barrel-fermented Belgian-style quadrupel with blackberries, is no exception. A style known for being at the more malty, complex and rich end of the Belgian strong ale spectrum, this quad revels in layers of sweet caramel, dark fruit and figgy flavors, and complimentary undercurrents of oak. The natural esters from the Belgian yeast compliment the rustic, earthy qualities derived from the barrels and piquant flavors from the fruit for a dynamic flavor profile and mouthfeel that will evolve over time.”  ABV: 10.2%.

hottenrothThe Bruery Hottenroth- “Hottenroth Berliner Weisse is brewed in memory of Fred & Sarah Hottenroth, Patrick’s grandparents. This tart, German-style Berliner Weisse is as authentic as it gets. We use lactobacillus and a hint of brettanomyces to sour this very unusual, low gravity wheat beer. To cut the tartness for those with sweeter tastes, raspberry or woodruff syrup is a traditional way to sweeten the beer. Almost an extinct style, we hope to help revive the Berliner Weisse in memory of two great people.”  ABV: 3.1%.

kriekboonKriek Boon- “The cherries and young lambic create a red beer that is both natural and fresh, with an absolutely unforgettable sweet and sour taste. This is kriek as it should be, with nothing but real cherries and lambic. There is no place for artificial colourings or flavorings.”  ABV: 4%.

Boon_Kriek_Mariage_ParfaitKriek Mariage Parfait- “Kriek Boon Mariage Parfait consists of 1 year-old heavy lambic flavoured with overripe cherries, 400 grams per litre. Longer aging in small oak barrels gives it its special flavour. The lambic is bottled and stored in an air-conditioned room for six months of secondary fermentation. Kriek Mariage Parfait has an alcohol volume of 8%. It keeps for a minimum 20 years, and is ready to drink after about 2 years in the bottle. This is perfection in kriek beers. Try it and admit that it surpasses the best wine.”

boonframboiseFramboise Boon- “Raspberry lambic was once a rarity and only produced for a few weeks during the summer. Frank Boon was the first brewer to again prepare a raspberry lambic in the summer of 1976. More than 300 grams per litre of fresh raspberries give Framboise Boon a fresh fruity taste. The young lambic supports the flavour. But this is very much about raspberries, not the lambic. Of course we do not use artificial flavourings, only real raspberries. Boon Framboise has an alcohol volume of 5%. Drink it when it is young.”

averycertaioAvery Certatio Equestris- “Modeled after the ubiquitous mint julep. The base sour ale was aged in bourbon barrels with spearmint leaves (the key ingredient in the julep, after bourbon). You can probably imagine the result from here”  ABV: 8.9%.

Rodenbach-Grand-Cru-AleRodenbach Grand Cru- “A blend of 1/3 young beer and 2/3 of beer aged 2 years in large oak vats. The more important proportion of oak matured beer contributes to its fruity taste, complexity and intensity. The finish is worthy of a great wine.”  ABV: 6%.

Rodenbach 2011 Vintage-  An Oak Aged Flanders Red, only brewed once.  ABV: 7%.

Rodenbach 2012 Vintage- An Oak Aged Flanders Red, only brewed once.  ABV: 7%.

LR_ROD_CR_LABELFRONT_75_USA_V5Rodenbach Caractere Rouge- “The brewer allow the beer to macerate with fresh cherries, raspberries and cranberries. After this maceration in oak, the beer re-ferments in the bottle. The result is RODENBACH Caractère Rouge, an exceptional RODENBACH with fruit maceration and a 7% alcohol volume. The brew is more than unique and extremely exclusive, as only 900 75-cl bottles were produced (first batch). Geunes serves this wilful beer as part of his other unique range of beer varieties in his restaurant, ’t Zilte, at the Antwerp MAS museum.”

yumyum3 Floyd’s Yum Yum- “Welcome to flavor country. This Pale Ale has just the right malt backbone to support an explosive juicy hop profile. Derived from a new blend of proprietary hops. We hope you’ll enjoy it. Cheers!”  ABV: 5.5%.

alphaking3 Floyd’s Alpha King- “A bold yet balanced American Pale Ale with slight caramel sweetness and aggressive citrus hoppiness. This is our flagship beer.”  ABV: 6.66%.

We’ll see you soon!  Cheers!!

Alaskan Brewing Releasing in Ohio!

For years Ohioans have been hopeful that the Juneau based brewery, Alaskan Brewing, would start sending their beers to Ohio.  Finally it’s happening!  Ohio will be the 18th state that Alaskan will distribute to, but the furthest east.  Alaskan Brewing is ranked in the top 25 largest breweries in the U.S. based on volume.  They recognized that while Ohio is a booming craft beer market, and highly competitive, that Ohio craft beer drinkers would be a worthy recipient of their quality liquid because we take our beer quite seriously here in Ohio, and we appreciate good beer!

At Cappy’s we will officially launch Alaskan Brewing beers on Friday, July 15th!  The initial beers that we’ll have available in 6 packs are:

beer-hero-alaskan-amber-1Amber Alt-Style Ale- “The name of this beer style comes from the German word “alt” meaning “old”. This refers to the aging that alts undergo since they ferment more slowly and at colder temperatures than most ales. Slow fermentation helps condition the flavors in Alaskan Amber, contributing to its overall balance and smoothness.”

Icy Bay IPA- “characterized by intense hop flavor and aroma accompanied with medium maltiness and body while also being crisp and dry.”

Kicker Session IPA- “Inspired by 24 hours of daylight, Kicker Session IPA is an anytime brew with fruity Citra and Amarillo hops and a burst of bright citrus Simcoe hop aroma.”

All 6 packs are $9.99.  We will also have their mixed 12 packs for $18.99 containing Amber, Icy Bay IPA, White (A Belgian style Wit beer), and a rotating “surprise beer”.

On Friday, to celebrate Alaskan Brewing’s release, we will also be tapping Amber and Hopothermia  DIPA!  With the excitement surrounding this release, the beers will go quickly!  So get your growlers and your wallets, and come to Cappy’s on Friday for your Alaskan Brewing fix!

PrintWeyerbacher 21st Anniversary- To celebrate Weyerbacher’s 21st birthday, they brewed a beer designed to taste like the most amazing birthday cake.  Cocoa nibs and cocoa powder give this big beer its rich chocolate flavor. Vanilla beans and Munich malts add a cake layer of flavor. Where’s the icing? We’re blending this already amazing beer with its bourbon barrel aged counterpart, while smoked malts bring a touch of bacon.  Imagine a chocolate cake with vanilla, bacon, bourbon frosting in a glass and that’s exactly what this amazing brew tastes like.  ABV: 11.9%.

Strawberry-Shorts-Cake1Shorts Strawberry Short’s Cake-  “Strawberry Short’s Cake is a Golden Ale brewed with the addition of strawberries and milk sugar. The flavors of shortcake and fresh strawberries transform this beer into rose-colored party nectar that is pleasingly sweet with hints of cream. Biscuit flavors and aromas arise from the use of large amounts of Victory malt.”  ABV: 4.3%.

Rhinegeist_PeachDodoRhinegeist Peach Dodo- A limited Spring release from local brewery, Rhinegeist.  Peach Dodo is a gose with peach, and a great light, refreshing, slightly tart brew.  If you’re trying to get into sours, Peach Dodo is a great choice to get you pointed in the sour direction without being too in your face.  ABV: 4%.

lagunitasdownlowLagunitas The Down Low- “This dry and hoppy copper ale is packed full of some of our favorite Northwestern Hops from Perrault Farms (over 2 lbs. per barrel!), and copper-fied with some dark crystal malts to make this tropical, earthy, and stoooopidly slammable ale.”  ABV: 3.9%.

newhollandreserverasplemonNew Holland Dragon’s Milk Reserve with Raspberry Lemon- “This reserve blend is aged in bourbon barrels for three months, with Michigan raspberries and lemon zest added during aging.  The raspberries bring a depth to Dragon’s Milk that we love and the lemon zest kicks up the fruit aromas and provides a unique, bright, and exciting experience. Our brewers nailed it.”  ABV: 11%.

Nugget_BottleFlying Dog Single Hop Series: “Nugget Imperial IPA- Each Single Hop release has an identical grain bill while incorporating a single and different hop to allow you to discern the nuances of each hop variety. Nugget is known for being a bitter betty, and both that bitterness and the aroma will fight for center stage on this one. Bust out the sausages, or charcuterie if you want to get fancy about it, and bring on the Nugget.”  ABV: 8.0%.

f&BDogfish Head Flesh&Blood- “An honest to goodness IPA brewed with a bounty of real citrus including lemon flesh, blood orange juice plus orange and lemon peel. A combination of Warrior, Centennial, and a rare experimental hop to perfectly complement the citrus ingredients and flavor. Flesh & Blood balances the resinous hoppy characteristics of an American IPA with the explosive, zesty fruitiness and subtle dry tartness of citrus to deliver a highly quaffable ale that’s incredibly unique and lovely to down the whole year round.”  ABV: 7.5%.
