A Reflection on My First Year in The Craft Beer Industry

In my 30 years I’ve wanted to “be” many things.  A Veterinarian, The President, a Lawyer, a Writer, a Radio Personality, the list goes on and on.  I’ve also had many jobs in many different fields, a slew of restaurants, retail management, office manager, sales, banking, etc.  Never did I imagine that I’d end up 30, with two kids,  working at a liquor store. One year ago, that is where I was hired though, Cappy’s Wine&Spirits.  At the time, I was desperate for a job, but specifically one that worked with my limited schedule.  I was coming off of a two year stint of being a Stay-at-Home-Mom due to the end of a long-term relationship, ultimately forcing me to go back to work to support myself and my two kids.  After several unanswered applications, and unsuccessful interviews, I was down at my local liquor store, Cappy’s, to get a bottle of wine.  While there, I ran into Ben, the Owner of Cappy’s, who I had worked for at a previous business.  During our conversation I casually joked, “hey, you’re not hiring, are you?” and as luck would have it, he was.  The following Monday I began working at what I thought was just a liquor store, but I soon learned that it’s so much more.  What I thought was going to be a liquor store clerk job, was actually the launch of my career in craft beer.

In exactly one year I have gone from knowing literally nothing about beer, to having over 700 different beers from all over the world, beer trading, bottle shares, brewery tours, blogging, etc.  In other words, I completely immersed myself in the Craft Beer World.  It is by far my favorite job I’ve ever had, and I feel so lucky to get the privilege to be a part of such an amazing business, and fantastic community.  So many cool things have happened in the past year that I could go on and on about, that I decided to make a list instead, some of my favorite things from my first full year in the craft beer industry.  (But if you ever want to hear stories, I’ve got those for days.).  So here it is, my unofficial, personal favorites from my first year.

Favorite Brewery: Jackie O’s

Favorite Beer: Oro Negro (Jackie O’s)

Favorite Brewery That I Went To: Hoof Hearted

My Kids Favorite Brewery That They Went To: Madtree

Favorite Cincinnati Craft Beer Event That I Went To:  Madtree Summer Bonanza

Favorite Place for Brunch&Beer in Cincinnati: Brew River

Favorite Thing About Working In The Craft Beer Industry: The People.  Hands down.

Want to know anything else? Just ask me!  The people that I have met through this job really are what make me love it so much.  So many different types of people, with different jobs and backgrounds, yet we all come together over our love of Craft Beer.  I have yet to find a community until now that I have felt so welcome in, and that is why I will continue to grow in this career.  Now that I’ve had a taste of it, only one year, I can’t wait to see what else the future holds.  So many beers to try, breweries to visit, and people to meet.  I may not be The President or a Radio Personality like I thought I would be, but I wouldn’t trade it for any other industry in the world.  And who knows?  Maybe I’ll still go on to be some of those things also…

Below is a compilation of pictures from my first year 🙂
